Partner Feature – Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Northwest Tuscon

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation has a strong commitment to going “green” and serving their community and in an effort to join those two missions the church hiking club has formed an exciting partnership with the Friends of Ironwood Forest and the Bureau of Land Managment (BLM) Tucson Field office. The group will be coming out every month to help preform much needed restoration work on the Ironwood  Forest National Monument.

As part of the first project the members where introduced to one of the ongoing issues facing the Ironwood Forest.

The Ironwood Forest is a popular site for recreational shooting in the Tucson area. Unfortunately some of the shooters leave behind broken beer bottles, destroyed house hold appliances ( three tv’s, an entire set of kitchen cabinets and a washing machine at this site), and other random and sometimes odd (a baby’s bed?) debris.

Last February, about 15 members of the Congregation along with BLM staff and the Friends of Ironwood Forest removed 24 lawn sized bags full of garbage.

And all in time to have a nice lunch out on the Monument!

Great job Guys!

Looking forward to our next project!
